Kazama Chikage across Hakuoki, 2008–2026: A Release-by-Release Guide

September 11, 2026

Kazama Chikage appears across romance routes, shared scenes, prequels, animation, audio dramas and short prose. This guide follows that material by medium, showing what each release carries and where later editions add or collect it. Coverage is selective and updated through 4 October 2026; announced future productions are noted separately.

Dates refer to releases, rather than the age of every scene they contain. Some early texts are known here through later editions; their original wording is not assumed to be identical. Merchandise and illustration fall outside this guide unless they carry newly written text or newly recorded voice for him; such items are listed where known. Live-action adaptations — musicals, TV dramas and film — with commercial DVD or Blu-ray releases are covered in a separate section; unreleased live performance is not included.

Games

The 40 entries below include ports and compilations, so they do not represent 40 separate stories. Dates follow the publisher's title archive and the product records used in the bibliography.

2008–2012

(PS2) (2008-09-18). His hidden romance route, one of six. The text considered here is preserved in later editions; the 2008 disc was not directly compared.

(PSP) (2009-08-27). His route, plus the first-person novella 飽くなきもの in 遺聞 戦友絵巻.

Five 恋情想起 episodes and 事件想起 二, known through later editions.

DS (2010-03-18). His route and participation in the added voiced quiz. The quiz is recorded speech rather than a narrative episode.

(PSP) (2010-05-13). A festival scene involving the heroine's wishes.

(PS3) (2010-06-17). Collects the original game and 随想録. Four oni-centred 戦友絵巻 stories were offered as downloads; identification with the paired novellas remains an inference.

Adds his 事件想起 三, 送り火, to the earlier fan disc.

(PS2) (2010-10-28). The scenes listed under the 2011 PSP edition belong to this prequel line. Their individual presence in the 2010 disc has not been directly verified; their attribution to it rests on the port-addition records.

  • 随想録 DS (2011-02-17). Includes four oni-centred 戦友絵巻 stories, provisionally identified with the paired novellas, and his passage in the map feature 薄桜鬼紀行.

DS (2011-04-28). Carries the festival material. Added karuta and alarm voices are recorded speech rather than new narrative episodes.

(PSP) (2011-07-28). The examined version: three Serizawa-route scenes, one common-route bad ending, two 幕末講義録 chapters and two 十六夜挿話.

3D (3DS) (2011-11-24). His route; the limited-edition drama is listed under game bonuses below.

(PSP) (2012-03-22). Playable in both modes. His chapter closes the six-chapter original story; the other mode retells the main game. No substantial divergence is recorded for the retelling mode; brief additions remain unresolved.

DS (2012-04-26). Carries the prequel material. Its added sections do not establish a new narrative episode of his.

(PS3) (2012-06-28). Carries the prequel material; no additional narrative of his is established in the added sections.

A 桜下恋語り conversation; a separate Stellaworth story booklet is listed below.

2013–2014

  • 懐古録 (mobile) (2013, issued by volume). An episodic work, not a route-based game. He appears in volumes 一, 三, 六, 七, 九, 十 and 終巻; 九 centres on him. Examined through the 2023 collection.

(PSP) (2013-06-27). Two located scenes, one each in the Takasugi and Katsura routes, and a related rumour quest. The nameplate behaves differently in the two scenes. No further appearance was found in the surveyed recordings.

(PSV) (2013-12-19). His route and an outcome of the added shared scene 雨下語り, examined in the 2023 collection.

(PC) (2014-03-06). Carries the same seven volumes in which he appears.

  • 薄桜鬼 for iOS & Android (2014-03-06). His route, a branch of the added scenario 茶会代理始末, and the 遺聞 novellas.

  • SSL (PSV) (2014-03-27). One of six main romance routes. His route and epilogue are supplemented by common scenes, appearances in other routes and nine emails from him.

A credit-level entry. Secondary sources report his name in the staff roll alongside the five Shinsengumi captains, but his particular scenes have not been located in the surveyed material. One of the game's three story lines remains unseen.

2015–2018

(PSV) (2015-02-19). Carries the earlier fan-disc material with its 2009 art.

(PSV) (2015-07-02). Carries the prequel material with its 2010 art. The text was examined in the 2011 port; this edition's own additions are not established here.

(PSV) (2015-09-25). His part in the first half of the remake, including two substantial conversations behind an optional event.

(PSV) (2016-06-16). His romance route in the second half of the remake. A paid DLC of six short episodes, set in the second month of Meiji 2, opens with his.

(PSV) (2016-11-17). A piece in each of two character-specific unlockable modes, plus an all-clear reward scene.

(PS4) (2017-07-13). Collects the two remake halves; no new text of his is identified.

(PC) (2017-08-25). Carries his material from the first remake half.

(PC) (2018-03-15). Carries his material from the second remake half.

(Switch) (2018-09-06). Carries the bundled remake; no new text of his is identified.

  • 真改 for iOS & Android (2018-12-12). Carries his material from both remake halves.

2019–2024

(Switch) (2019-09-26). Eight route episodes and an epilogue. Two separate bonus booklets each contain a first-person piece of his.

(Switch) (2020-07-30). He has no romance route. A shared scene of the three oni at an inn is attributed to this release in the record, but the underlying note dates it to 2019; its allocation between the two fan discs remains unresolved.

Adds his 文久心覚え piece to the prequel line; the limited-edition drama is listed under game bonuses below.

(Switch) (2022-10-06). His route; two separate story booklets are listed below.

  • SSL for Switch (2023-06-15). Carries his school-setting route and adds a special-edition booklet containing a piece of his.

(Switch) (2023-08-10). Collects earlier side stories under the remake's sprites, including 懐古録, 戦友絵巻 and his 紀行録 passage. Includes 事件想起 四 and 五, whose first publication is unresolved, and 鬼、集うとき, narrated by Senhime. His 恋情想起 pieces are not collected.

Carries the earlier minigame collection; separately issued booklets accompany this edition.

Live-action adaptations

This section covers musicals and live-action TV / film adaptations with commercial DVD or Blu-ray releases. Kazama's participation is identified where supported by cast documentation; an unresolved entry is explicitly qualified. None of these productions has been viewed for this guide; dates, formats and cast names are drawn from publisher announcements and retailer listings. Unreleased live performances are not included. Song collections and original-soundtrack albums are not counted as independent narratives.

Musicals

Since 2012, Marvelous has produced a musical series (ミュージカル薄桜鬼) adapted from the games. The list below covers narrative performance releases, including the 2015 黎明録 with Kazama's participation unresolved. Two concert-event releases (HAKU-MYU LIVE, 2014; HAKU-MYU LIVE 2, 2016) also list him, but these are song-based live events without continuous narrative and are not counted here. Cast names are checked against the publisher's official production and product pages; a combined catalogue covering the first series and 原田左之助 篇 is at the disco page.

Eight of the twenty commercial drama CDs in the examined TEAM Entertainment catalogue name Kazama in their full cast lists. This count concerns that defined product line; it is not the total number of Hakuoki audio releases.

Web radio DJCD series

薄桜鬼WEBラジオ 新選組通信 was a free web radio programme on Animate TV (2009–2010), hosted by Miki Shinichirō with rotating voice-actor guests. Its commercially released DJCD compilations, titled 新選組通信録, run to twelve volumes (第一集–第十二集, 2009-10-29 → 2011-03-03; Otomate goods page). The earlier volumes pair the main radio compilation (voice-actor talk, not narrative) with a bonus disc carrying an original in-character mini-drama. The twelfth and last volume is different: its bonus is a video record of the closing live broadcast (purchase report, 2011-03-03) — a record of an event, not a written piece, and not counted here.

The bonus drama series is titled 怒られ隊士 (later volumes shift to 慰められ隊士). Two of them are his: Volume 7 (2010-07-22) carries 「怒る鬼・風間千景編」 (auction record; catalogue entry), and Volume 11 carries 「慰める鬼・風間編」, with Tsuda Kenjirou in the cast (item listing).

Other recordings

(Hifumi Shobō, 2010). A book-bound release including an original drama 士魂盲進の影 and voice-actor talk; Tsuda Kenjirou is named in the cast. Otomate announcement

  • 桜の宴 fan events. Held in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2018 and 2024, and released on video; only the editions Tsuda Kenjirou attended are listed, since those carry a reading play with Kazama. In 2010 he took part by recorded announcement only, and he did not attend in 2024.

2012 (DVD, Movic MOVC-14, 2012-08-31). An attendee's report describes Hijikata and Kazama facing each other in the reading play. Event page; Otomate goods page
2013 (DVD, Movic MOVC-25, 2013-09-27). Tsuda is in the official cast. The DVD presents the daytime show as a digest without its reading corner. Event page; Otomate goods page
2018 (Blu-ray and DVD, 2018-12-20). Its reading play was performed by six cast members, Tsuda as Kazama among them. Event report
A studio-recorded reading play featuring Tsuda Kenjirou as Kazama. The companion 前編, in the first-series Blu-ray box (2013-11-27), does not include Kazama.

Print and short prose

Books and adaptations

(2010) story books print the game scripts; his original route falls in 新選組奇譚 下. The volumes were not consulted here.

(2011) recomposes the scenarios into a three-volume story book (上・中・下, B's-LOG COLLECTION). The Serizawa route, where his prequel scenes fall, runs through 中 and 下; inclusion of the particular scenes listed under the game is unconfirmed.

  • Yajima Sara's 黎明録 novels, 壱 and 弐 (2012-10-15, 2013-01-15), adapt the TV series rather than the game. No listing establishes whether his episode-10 scene is retold.

  • Yajima Sara's Beads Log Bunko novels comprise eight volumes. Kazama appears from volume 2; volume 6, 雪華録 ~明~, includes a chapter from the oni's viewpoint.

  • Film novels by 藤澤経清, one of the films' credited screenwriters, newly written for the first-edition Blu-ray and DVD of each film (NBC Universal). 劇場版 薄桜鬼 京都乱舞 想片録 accompanies Film ch. 1 (2014-02-26); a novel for Film ch. 2 accompanies its first edition (2014-09-10), and its title is unconfirmed. Both retell films in which he appears. Neither was sold separately, and neither was consulted here. Publisher listing

  • Comic adaptations include works by Ninomiya Sachi and Hiraku Nagi, Junrenka, and adaptations of 雪華録 and 黎明録. His presence has not been checked volume by volume. (2011) names him explicitly.

  • Comics in which he is confirmed. (2012-10-22) includes an official comic adaptation of 雪華録's Kazama chapter, according to the publisher. The 真改 comic by にかわ柚生 (2017-09-12) stages his confrontation with Hijikata, according to a manga database. He also appears in the SSL comic (2014, two volumes), the 雪華録 comic by 篠原花那 (2012) and the 黎明録 comic by 暁かおり (2012–2013, three volumes). Readers' reviews place him in the anthologies 焔 and 凛 (both 2011-10-01), in 凛 only marginally.

  • Anthologies not established either way. No listing names him for 紅 and 蒼 (2009), 千恋抄 (2011), 雪華録 蒼穹 (2012), and 黎明録 閃 and 煉 (2012).

戦友絵巻: magazine stories collected in books and games

Two first-person pieces appear in the 2010 collection 公式物語絵巻 ~桜花風塵~: 飽くなきもの and 狂い咲く花の如く, the latter headed 土方×風間. Both were examined in the Japanese text of 万葉ノ抄 (2023). He also appears in a third piece from the same collection, 善し悪し, headed 原田×不知火.

飽くなきもの also appears in the 2009 PSP game's 遺聞 module. The publisher traces four oni-centred stories in 随想録 DS to the magazine serial and earlier 巡想録 downloads, but identifying those four with the paired novellas remains an inference. Publisher description.

Booklets, inserts and magazine pieces

These shorter works include standalone stories, reprints and texts known only through listings. The distinction matters where a piece has not been read in Japanese.

New Year mail (2011). A paid in-character greeting delivered on 1–3 January. The publisher wrote the six leads' mails, his included, as married couples after their romance endings. His text is known through a fan's image. Otomate staff blog, 2010-12-17

(2011). Published on 30 September 2011 by ASCII Media Works. Besides a producer interview, it carries 風間千景訪問詞集, a fictional interview written in his voice. Known through a Chinese fan translation.

  • 雪華録, chapter 6 insert (2012). 親の心、子知らず—— follows Amagiri and Senhime alongside the OVA. A purchaser reports that Kazama is discussed; his direct presence is unconfirmed. Reference

秋の新選組大運動会! includes an oni team of Kazama, Amagiri and Shiranui, according to a purchaser’s account. Reference

A solo Kazama story and illustration in Dengeki Girl’s Style, identified by the publisher’s blurb. Reference

A separate set of content notes discusses the prequel’s viewpoints, 裏語’s handling of his name, SSL’s correspondence and the two 月影 booklets. They keep scene interpretation separate from the release record.
